Next God of War Rumored to Go 2.5D with a New Twist

Insiders have shared surprising details about the next God of War title, and it’s not what fans might expect.

Instead of another huge 3D action game, the next game could be a 2.5D Metroidvania-style experience. Think more like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown or Blasphemous, with side-scrolling action and puzzle-solving gameplay.

Deimos Returns as the Lead Character

According to insiders like Shpeshal_Nick and sources on ResetEra, the new God of War title won’t star Kratos directly. Instead, players will take on the role of Deimos, Kratos’ long-lost brother. The game will be set in ancient Greece, before Kratos becomes a god, giving it a strong prequel vibe with classic mythological settings.

It’s rumored that this spin-off is being developed under the guidance of Santa Monica Studio, with Mega Cat Studios possibly helping out. The style is said to be inspired by Blasphemous, which means fans can expect dark art and intense action.

When Could We See It?

The announcement could happen very soon. With the PlayStation State of Play event on June 4 and Summer Game Fest 2025 on June 6, there are two major opportunities where Sony might reveal this new direction for the God of War series.

2025 is also the 20th anniversary of the franchise, making the timing perfect for a new project.

While this is still unconfirmed, the rumors are stacking up. Between trusted insiders and developer hints, a God of War Metroidvania starring Deimos could be the next big surprise from Sony’s legendary series.
