  • It may launch alongside Avatar 3 and possibly on Nintendo Switch 2.

Ubisoft Might Be Betting on Avatar Again with Director’s Cut in 2025

A new report by reliable insider Tom Henderson suggests Ubisoft could be planning to release a Director’s Cut of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora before the end of 2025. This expanded edition would likely include the game’s two major DLCs—The Sky Breaker and Secrets of the Spires—alongside core gameplay enhancements and optimizations.

Timing the Launch with Avatar 3 and Switch 2

The likely release window for the Director’s Cut coincides with the upcoming premiere of Avatar 3: Fire and Ash, set to debut in theaters on December 19, 2025. Ubisoft may be hoping to leverage the movie’s global buzz to reignite interest in the game, which received lukewarm responses at launch in December 2023.

Adding more fuel to the speculation, this revamped version could also arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. The original game skipped the first-generation Switch, but with the Switch 2 expected to support higher-end visuals, Ubisoft may now see an opportunity to reach new audiences on Nintendo’s next console.

Reception and Missed Potential at Launch

At launch, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora impressed with its visuals but didn’t quite meet expectations in terms of gameplay. While technically sound, it was criticized for being another “Ubisoft-style” open world experience without fresh ideas. The 7.5/10 review score from Wccftech summed it up: “A beautiful world, but frustrating combat.”

Since then, Ubisoft Massive has continued to support the title with meaningful post-launch content. Both DLCs added new biomes, Na’vi clans, mounts, and weapons, making the game richer for fans who stuck with it. A Director’s Cut bundling all this could offer a much better package than the base game alone.

Will This Director’s Cut Make a Difference?

While the move seems strategic, it remains unclear if the new version can change the game’s fortunes. As some analysts point out, Ubisoft might be hoping to “recoup” part of the investment made in this high-budget title by relaunching it with added value. But whether fans will bite a second time is uncertain.

Still, for newcomers jumping into the Avatar universe around the time of the movie release—or those picking up a Switch 2—it might be an enticing option. At the very least, it gives Ubisoft one more shot to make Pandora shine.
