Square Enix Is Remaking Dragon Quest 7 But on a Smaller Scale, Says Schreier

Square Enix is reportedly working on a remake of Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, though this project appears to be more modest compared to the ambitious Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Trusted journalist Jason Schreier hinted at the remake’s existence in a recent exchange on ResetEra, confirming that Square Enix aims to remake many Dragon Quest titles for modern platforms, but not all will be massive revamps.

He says, “I think it’s safe to say that Square wants to remake as many DQ games as possible for modern platforms. Doesn’t mean all or any of them are going to be big ambitious revamps like FFVIIR.”

Originally released for the PlayStation in 2000 (Japan) and 2001 (North America), Dragon Quest 7 is known for its lengthy gameplay and deep class system. While it was previously remade for the Nintendo 3DS, fans have long hoped for a refreshed version on contemporary home consoles. The rumoured remake is expected to focus on polishing and updating the game visually and mechanically without drastically changing the core experience.

This move fits within Square Enix’s larger plan, which includes the upcoming release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake scheduled for October 30, 2025. An internal document also hints that Dragon Quest 7 could release within this fiscal year or early next year.

Although no official announcement has been made, the company’s recent trend of revitalising legacy titles makes the remake highly plausible.

For fans of the Dragon Quest series, this means that Dragon Quest 7 might soon be available with a modern polish, introducing the classic RPG to new players while satisfying returning fans. But as always, these rumours should be taken cautiously until Square Enix provides official confirmation.
