Nintendo clarifies Switch 2 sales data for June: “It was just test data”
A surprising figure briefly appeared on Nintendo’s official investor relations site this week, showing that the new Switch 2 had already sold 5 million units within its first 26 days. But just as quickly, the company stepped in to say: not so fast. That number isn’t real.
In a statement shared with respected analyst David Gibson of MST Financial, Nintendo explained that the data was placeholder test content and not an actual sales result or projection. “Temporarily visible data was for testing purposes only, and is not accurate and not related to any sales result or projection of Switch 2,” Nintendo said.
The post has since been deleted from the company’s website, but not before it was preserved and widely shared by the community, sparking excitement and confusion about the console’s actual performance.
Analysts still expect huge numbers for Switch 2
Even though Nintendo says the 5 million figure isn’t real, experts believe the real number might be even higher. David Gibson himself mentioned in a follow-up post that the actual June sales for the Switch 2 could exceed 5.4 million units once Nintendo reveals the official results.
Another known industry analyst, Daniel Ahmad, also commented that 5 million units “is too low anyway,” suggesting Nintendo’s next-gen console is off to a blistering start globally.
Nintendo plans to reveal its official quarterly earnings—including confirmed Switch 2 sales data—on August 1. Those numbers will give a clear picture of just how well the console has done in its launch month.
Despite the confusion, one thing is clear: the Switch 2 is likely a massive success. Earlier reports claimed the system sold over 3 million units within its launch week alone, even beating the PlayStation 5’s early momentum in key markets like the U.S. and Japan.
While we wait for the official figures on August 1, all signs suggest the Switch 2 may become Nintendo’s fastest-selling console ever—test data or not.
