Sony Interactive Entertainment is making a significant move in the virtual reality (VR) space by submitting a PlayStation VR2 aka PSVR2 PC adapter for certification in South Korea.

They want to make their VR headset, PSVR2, work not just with the PlayStation 5 (PS5), but also with computers. This means PSVR2 players might get to play more games on their PCs, which could make more people want to buy the device and give players more games to choose from.

PSVR2 PC Adapter: A Closer Step Towards PC Compatibility

Sony Korea applied for certification for the PSVR2 PC adapter on March 27, 2024. This info was uncovered by Twitter user @SadlyItsBradley. Though it’s not an official announcement, it suggests Sony is progressing as planned to make the PSVR2 work with PCs by the end of 2024.

The certification of the PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) PC adapter is a significant step towards making the PlayStation VR2 compatible with PCs. This means the PSVR2, originally made for the PlayStation 5 (PS5), will soon be usable on PCs too.

The PSVR2 headset, priced at $549, was initially released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 in February 2023. However, this limited availability meant that players who wanted to experience PSVR2 had to invest in both the headset and the console, totaling over a thousand dollars. Because of this, sales decreased significantly.

Sony stopped making more headsets after making 2 million because they had too many unsold ones, according to Bloomberg. Moreover, Sony announced that the PSVR2 sold 600,000 units in the first six weeks after it was released, but they haven’t said how many were sold since then.

Now, they’re making it work with PCs too. This decision is a smart move to increase sales and reach more gamers beyond just PS5 users.

Sony’s Statement on PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter

Sony has previously confirmed its intentions to make the PSVR2 headset compatible with PC. In a statement released in February 2024, Sony expressed its excitement about the ongoing tests that would allow PSVR2 users to enjoy a wider range of games on PC, in addition to the exclusive PSVR2 titles available on PS5.

Eric Lempe, the head of global business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, acknowledged in December 2023 that while the sales have been satisfactory, the impact of VR on gaming had not met the general expectations.

Overall, Sony is optimistic that the introduction of PSVR2 to the PC platform will stimulate a jump in device sales, which have not been as strong as anticipated.
