Resident Evil Requiem Was Almost an Online Open-World Shooter, Devs Reveal

Summary

  • Resident Evil Requiem was going to be an online open-world game with lots of action.
  • The devs showed early gameplay where players teamed up to fight bosses and hordes.
  • They scrapped that idea because fans wanted a scarier, more classic Resident Evil experience.
  • Now it’s a single-player horror game focused on “addictive fear.”
  • The game releases on February 27, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Resident Evil Requiem’s Early Big Plans

The extended version of the Creator’s Message from the Resident Evil Requiem devs is now up on the Resident Evil Portal. In the video, RE9’s producer Masachika Kawata makes it clear—Resident Evil Requiem is a single-player offline game, so no online stuff here.

He also talked about how the team tried out different ideas during the early stages of making the game. Then, director Koshi Nakanishi brought up the big question—he jokingly asked if people had heard rumors about things like “Resident Evil Online” or even an “open-world Resident Evil”.

So, at first, Resident Evil Requiem wasn’t going to be the creepy single-player game we expected, Nakanishi revealed. The devs actually tried out this cool open-world style where you could team up online, explore Raccoon City, and battle all sorts of monsters together. It was a lot like a big action game with multiplayer.

They even showed some early footage with players fighting bosses and swarms of enemies side by side. It sounded like a fresh take, but the devs quickly saw it wasn’t what fans wanted.

Resident Evil Requiem is Back to Classic Horror

The team decided to drop the online and open-world ideas because Resident Evil fans really love the scary, intense vibes the series is known for. So, they went back to making a single-player game that’s all about fear, tension, and creepy moments.

They talked about making “addictive fear” the heart of the gameplay — meaning you feel the tension, beat your fears, and want to come back for more. That’s the kind of Resident Evil game they want to make.

What’s Next for Fans?

If you’re excited for Resident Evil Requiem, you won’t have to wait too long. The game is set to launch on February 27, 2026, on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC. No word yet on a Switch version.

So get ready for some classic Resident Evil scares and fun, without the big online multiplayer stuff.
