Square Enix Wants To Release Fewer Games To Ensure Higher Quality

Amidst the increasing game development life cycles, Square Enix plans to focus more on quality rather than quantity.

The company president, Takashi Kiryu, addressed the new strategies in a financial briefing. The aim is to trim the lineup and focus on the “quality over quantity” approach.

Square Enix has seen success with major IPs like the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series. However, other decent-quality games have not achieved the same level of success.

Part of the new strategy involves diversifying the lineup. Focusing on a few franchises or genres at a time could hinder the publisher’s growth in other areas.

The company has released mid-budget games that fall between blockbuster and indie titles. These games, like Harvestella and Valkyrie Elysium, have found niche communities but have not achieved the desired levels of success.

We may see Square Enix reduce its yearly releases in the near future. The focus will be on a more diversified lineup consisting of projects that are either on a small or large scale.
