The Last of Us Part II, one of the most anticipated games of the last decade, left much open-ended, paving the way for a potential sequel.
Neil Druckmann, the creator of Part 1 and creative director of Part II, confirmed in April 2021 that he has penned a story outline for a third game. However, it’s not in active development.
According to credible leaker Oops Leaks, Naughty Dog is actively working on several projects, including The Last of Us Part III.
It seems likely that a third game would continue Ellie’s story, possibly focusing on her relationship with Dina. Abby’s involvement is not guaranteed.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Druckmann teased that a third installment could be on the way, saying “I think there’s more story to tell.” He also pledged to only make Part 3 if they’re able to pin down a “really good compelling story”.
Given that the game was not in development as of Spring 2021 and still does not appear to be in development, any release will still be some years away.
With uncertainty surrounding the third game in the series, it’s worth looking at what developers Naughty Dog are confirmed to be working on.
