PlayStation Portable: AI Upscaling, 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM, PS5 Memory Bandwidth, and More Leaked

Summary

  • PlayStation Portable rumored to feature AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip with AI upscaling.
  • Includes 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and enhanced memory compression.
  • Built on RDNA5/UDNA architecture, shared with PlayStation 6.

Leaked PlayStation Portable Specs Hint at a Powerful Handheld

A new leak from well-known AMD insider KeplerL2 has revealed early specs for an upcoming PlayStation Portable device, which Sony has yet to officially announce.

The standout feature? AI upscaling powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip. This chip could be custom-designed just for this handheld, and it’s reportedly the only AMD APU with AI upscaling available before 2029.

The leak was shared on NeoGAF and suggests this new PlayStation Portable will include 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. While not the fastest memory by future standards, it’s described as “dirt cheap” and efficient enough for a high-end handheld. Most interestingly, the device will have only one-third of the PS5’s memory bandwidth, but this is balanced by better cache and memory compression enhancements.

Cache and Architecture Insights

According to KeplerL2, the device will include 4MB of L2 cache and 16MB of MALL cache, a feature not seen in the current generation of consoles. This could significantly enhance performance by speeding up data handling and improving load times.

Both the rumored handheld and the future PlayStation 6 will be based on a fork of the gfx13 RDNA5/UDNA architecture, offering a unified foundation for Sony’s next-gen gaming systems. That shared design could make development smoother across platforms, and might also hint at strong cross-play and ecosystem features.

Still Unannounced, But Growing More Likely

While Sony hasn’t confirmed the existence of this new PlayStation Portable, clues keep stacking up. For instance, recent reports mentioned a “low energy mode” coming to PS5 and PS5 Pro, which many believe is a performance profile tailored for this upcoming handheld. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also entering the handheld race with devices like the ROG Xbox Ally.

If these leaks are accurate, Sony’s next handheld won’t just be a streaming device like the PlayStation Portal. Instead, it could be a standalone powerhouse—one built for modern AAA gaming on the go.
