It’s a clear violation of copyright law, and recently, folks who tried it got caught pretty easily. Apparently, ISPs are sending out DMCA notices to anyone who got their hands on the leaked build of Marvel’s Wolverine.

On social media, some are claiming that ISPs are warning individuals not to install the fully functional development build of Marvel’s Wolverine, which was made public after ransomware attacked the game’s developer, Insomniac Games.

The leaked documents have revealed that Madripoor, Alaska, Avalon, Canada, and Japan will be the settings for Marvel’s Wolverine. The game opens with a cinematic opening sequence, and Logan finds himself in a cabin.

Posts on Twitter are lighting up with screenshots of DMCA notices from ISPs like Comcast sent by Insomniac Games themselves. These companies can track your online activity much too easily, and part of that activity involves installing and distributing game builds that were unlawfully obtained after a data hack.

Insomniac Games may track the person running the leaked prototype by sending data, including user IP information, to their server through the Marvel development build of Wolverine. Sony appears to have traced everyone who installed and played the prototype in this way, getting in touch with their ISPs to notify those users of the DMCA.

For those unaware, hackers were able to obtain more than 1 terabyte of data, including not just the Wolverine build but also an early batch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and some other crumbs of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This hack contained code, roadmaps, development builds, and the private data of both current and former employees.

Thousands of people criticized the cyber attack on the internet, and in the days that followed, a ton of spoilers for the next Wolverine game went viral on social media.

Furthermore, it was stated by a Reddit user that they examined the files folder that included the i34.exe from the allegedly early Marvel Spider-Man 3 build that was among the files that were released. However, they later stated that there isn’t an early build of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and that most of the contents in the folder are from Spider-Man 2.

Also, Insomniac Games has released a thorough statement regarding the incident, days after a ransomware group made public over a million files that it had taken from the company in a recent hack. The announcement was made public on social media and Insomniac expressed gratitude for the support following a cyberattack affecting their studio, acknowledging the emotional impact on their team and the theft of personal data, including details about the early development of Marvel’s Wolverine for PlayStation 5.

Despite the distress caused, they affirmed their resilience and the continuity of the game’s development. Insomniac assured that while the project would evolve during production, they would share official updates about Marvel’s Wolverine at an appropriate time, thanking everyone for their support during this challenging period.

According to the official data, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel’s Wolverine is a PlayStation-exclusive game that won’t be playable on Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S consoles. The game is being developed in partnership with Marvel Games and PlayStation. Considering how Sony acquired Insomniac Games in 2019, this is hardly surprising.

In addition, the teaser trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine shows a scene in a shabby dive bar with a man wearing a cowboy hat and covered in blood on his knuckles sipping beer at the bar. A second man appears, holding a knife, and the main character shows off metallic claws, giving away that Wolverine is there. In contrast to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series, the teaser conveys a darker and more mature tone even though it doesn’t disclose gameplay or Logan’s entire backstory.
