Techland Cancels Two Games, Refocuses on Dying Light: The Beast
The Dying Light developer Techland is reportedly shelving two major game projects, as revealed in a recent press release and confirmed by Polish outlet Puls Biznesu.
The decision comes on the heels of record financial losses totalling approximately $37 million USD in 2024, following another $25 million loss the previous year.
While Techland didn’t officially name the cancelled games, industry sources have identified one of them as the studio’s fantasy RPG previously revealed in May 2022, internally codenamed Project Cornerstone.
Drawing inspiration from the Star Wars universe, this title aimed to include mechanics like telekinetic object movement and time-stopping abilities. However, it reportedly suffered from poor leadership decisions, particularly regarding a switch to Unreal Engine, which ultimately contributed to its cancellation.
Layoffs Avoided, Teams Shifted to New Projects
In a statement provided to Insider Gaming, Techland clarified that the restructuring hasn’t resulted in layoffs. Instead, all developers from the cancelled games were reassigned to other in-progress projects. One of those is rumoured to be a new Call of Juarez title, marking a return to a franchise that hasn’t seen a mainline release since 2013. That project is reportedly being built in Unreal Engine as well.
Techland emphasised: “None of the reported changes have resulted in staff reductions… Our primary focus right now is to release Dying Light: The Beast for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.”
Well, despite the cancelled games, Techland’s roadmap remains active. Their next big release, Dying Light: The Beast, is scheduled to launch on August 22, 2025. Initially envisioned as DLC for Dying Light 2, it has since grown into a full standalone title.
This pivot was confirmed earlier this year, with the game now set to launch across multiple platforms, including Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S.
