The Finals Matchmaking: New improvements might lead to longer queues

New improvements to The Finals matchmaking might lead to longer queues

In October 2023, The Finals, a game combining elements from Counter-Strike, Warzone, and Rainbow Six Siege, launched its open beta. However, players faced frustrating matchmaking errors.

The issues were mainly due to overloaded servers, bugs in the developing game, and potential internet problems. Embark Studios (the game developer) addressed this issue with a skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) which they somewhat managed to improve in the latest hotfix 1.2.3 patch. However, this update might lead to longer waiting times as the game seeks better matches for players. Read on to learn more.

The newest update aims to improve the SBMM system in The Finals. However, Embark cautioned that this might result in slightly longer wait times for players, as the game will prioritize finding the best possible matchups.

Embark says, “We’ve made some changes to our skill-based matchmaking to ensure better quality games. This means matchmaking times are likely to be ever so longer, but you should find yourselves in slightly closer matches.”

It’s important to mention that there’s been a change in how backfills work. This is aimed at reducing the chances of players joining matches that are already in progress. This is often frustrating because your team might be at a disadvantage if they’ve been playing without a third teammate.

The Finals patch notes for Hotfix 1.2.3 include the following:

    • Skill-based matchmaking: Of Course, tweaked the matchmaking to improve game quality, so it might take a bit longer to find a match, but the games should be more evenly matched now.
    • Steam login problem: A fix has been implemented for Steam login issues causing incorrect ban messages. This resolves the bug and improves access for users experiencing difficulties.
    • Wrongful bans: Embark Studios has successfully addressed a major authentication issue initially mistaken for a ban. Players wrongly impacted can now relax, as bans have been lifted from accounts affected by this mix-up.
    • Incorrect Timer: Fixed the timer in the in-game shop to show accurate and reliable information while you’re shopping for your favorite items.

On top of that, they’ve improved backfilling in Quick Cash and Bank It modes, so now you’ll experience it less often. When you get backfilled, you’ll have more time in the match, especially in Bank It mode.

This is a positive change, as it reduces the frustration of being placed in an unwinnable situation and allows for a more meaningful contribution to the match even when joining late.
